Title: Application of Snoezelen therapy on the field of Pediatric Psycho-Oncology

Abstract

In the Clinic of Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation, Hematology, and Oncology in Wrocław, various forms of occupational therapy are employed to prevent developmental disorders in young oncology patients. The therapists on the ward aim to strengthen the cognitive functions of the patients, activate and motivate them to engage in activities, and alleviate the stress accompanying children at various stages of treatment. These actions are taken not only to reinforce patients in the wards but also to prepare them for their return to their natural environment. This preparation ensures that, upon reintegration into activities they engaged in before the illness, they can participate in life just like their peers. One of the therapies implemented on the ward is Snoezelen therapy, which perfectly aligns with the therapeutic principles of oncology. The Wrocław team of therapists wishes to share their several years of experience in working with pediatric oncology patients using Snoezelen therapy, as well as present the results of research conducted in the clinic. The research was carried out on oncologically ill children aged 4 to 8 years, utilizing standardized tests examining visual and auditory perception. The obtained results suggest that Snoezelen therapy can be an effective method of therapeutic work, preventing the regression of cognitive functions.
